  • Safety
    • Demonstrating familiarity with machine manual and safety instructions, OSHA requirements; complying with company safety practices and procedures
    • Using built-in safety devices such as interlock
    • Wearing personal protection devices such as safety glasses and hearing protection
    • Insuring that all tooling is secured properly before start-up
    • Closing covers prior to operating machine

  • Job Planning
    • Reading and interpreting blueprints, symbology, sketches, notes and dimensions

  • Machine Set-Up

    • Securing work piece or stock in holding fixture chuck

  • CNC Programming
    • Establishing machine references
    • Understanding calculations and inputting feed rate, speed of cutting tools and depth of cut
    • Programming controls to position cutting tools relative to workpiece, work shifts and tool offsets
    • Changing spindle speed and feed rates
    • Managing project files, directories, downloading via network, DOS, installing software packages (know your way around the system)

  • Quality Assurance
    • Checking first run pieces with quality control lead person; conferring throughout run with team and supervisor (as appropriate)
    • Verifying conformance of workpiece to finished specifications; performing measurements with variety of appropriate precision and semi precision instruments
    • Continuously checking each finished workpiece, following a Sample plan, against blue print, order specifications; using touch, Sight and machine sound
    • Monitoring condition of tools and changing as necessary
    • Checking workpieces under Optical Comparator and/or Coordinate
    • Measuring Machine where appropriate
    • Conferring with Quality Control lead and others on tool design, job layout and production methods; adjusting speed
    • Performing statistical process control (SPC) functions; keeping process records, graphing data as appropriate
    • Analyzing machining problems and recommending solutions, group problem solving
  • Machine and Tool Maintenance
    • Performing preproduction preventive maintenance according to procedures and schedule (cleaning machine, chips)
    • Clearing chips and scrap form machine regularly
    • Cleaning and lubricating machine
    • Removing and re-setting all tooling
    • Sharpening tooling using equipment such as engine lathe
