Receive report from prior shift and oversee assignments for nursing for his/her shift.
Ensure resident appointments, exams and physician orders are carried out.
Document care, treatment and resident condition changes taking appropriate action as needed.
Handle emergencies and provide supportive assistance to residents in a calm and professional manner.
Respond to concerns from residents, families, physicians or others professionally and in a timely manner.
Notify physicians promptly of resident emergencies or significant condition changes.
Oversee implementation of care plan and provides guidance and education to direct caregivers to ensure needed care and treatment is received.
Complete periodic rounds to check on resident well being and oversee staff performance.
Obtain report from direct caregivers and provides comprehensive report to oncoming shift.
Ensure care is provided for complex medical conditions according to facility policy and accepted standards of practice.
Manage medication administration and control and consults with pharmacist on concerns. Follow appropriate procedures and policies for controlled substances and adverse reactions, storage and recording of drugs.
Managing Work Teams
Act as liaison between residents, physicians, staff and families.
Provide individuals with direction, encouraging, teamwork and collaboration.
Ensure documentation completed according to facility policies.
Assume responsibility for managing survey process when needed. Assist in providing requested information to surveyors and keep Director of Nursing (DON)/Administration informed of requests. May accompany surveyors on initial tour.
Manage shift staffing and take needed action to ensure adequate staffing on upcoming shifts.
Managing Resources (supplies, equipment, staff, time
Update staff on changes in work or workplace related to new equipment, procedures, physician orders and/or resident changes.
Ensure adequate equipment is available and utilized to ensure staff and resident safety
Plan and organizes work to ensure timely task completion and work flow.
Make sound, timely decisions with consideration of ramifications.
Analyze issues, prioritize problems and involve appropriate individuals to select plan for resolution, anticipating outcomes and managing consequences.
Develop and maintain department budget efficiently monitoring use of supplies.
Interpersonal Relations (peers, other departments, families, subordinates, physicians)
Provide formal and informal recognition and rewards for employees for positive performance.
Participate in providing instruction to enhance on the job learning opportunities.
Collaborate with other departments to ensure residents receive nutritional support, participate in activities of their choice and receive therapy and other services ordered.
